University of Virginia Library

Filling A Void

We congratulate the University for the
appointment of a committee and advisor for
the purpose of attracting black faculty
members to the University.

Such action has been a long time coming,
and it reflects a conscious effort on the part
of the University to fill a terrible void in its
faculty and in its responsibility to society.
Virginia has a multitude of sins to remember
in this respect, and we can only hope that our
present efforts to attract black scholars will
not be futile.

The McCoid-Washington report, solicited
by President Shannon, is another example of
a dedication to opening the University to
scholarship worthy of the institution. It has
been a welcome revolution in Virginia higher
education that we have witnessed since blacks
began to be recruited as students and women
were first admitted. We look forward to the
day when black and female professors seek
and are welcomed to teach at Virginia and
such committees are no longer necessary.

For now, though, we look forward to
some concrete results of these
appointments.
