Platter Picks

Virgin is the latest in the rock opera field and already
acclaimed to be one of the best.

Due to the fact that its message is masked behind religious
conventions, its comparison to Superstar is inevitable.

There are two basic differences. The first being that Virgin
is an American release and thusly sounds American with a lot
of strings and horns. The second being that Virgin is a more
relevant work of art. An original concept by Father John
O'Reilly, a Catholic priest and member ofContemporary
Mission, Virgin
describes the paradox of modern religion;
does a man follow his custom or conscience? Religious custom
has had a way of masquerading as divine law. In Virgin an
idealistic young man newly ordained to the priesthood faces
this universal dilemma. In his everyday life, he is continually
torn between his conscience and his cherished customs.

By the way, when the Fillmore East reopened it was Virgin
that was booked for the first month, and also the fellow who
toured Superstar is already making plans to take Virginia
nationwide.
