Going Down The Road
... Another Tradition

As recently as three years
ago, students going down the
road were equipped with the
latest Eljo's threads and the
ever-handy pocket flasks of
Rebel Yell

While the attire has
changed to blue jeans and
work shirts and while the
most common refreshment is
an ounce of Albemarle Green
and a bottle of Boone's Farm,
the art of road tripping has
changed little in spirit or
objective

First year-man will still our
scenic Crozet at 2 a.m. suffer
frostben thumbs, dodge
highway patrols, and watch
their egos get damaged all
part of the tradition.

The fall mixer season will
begin soon Although many
students decide there is no
future in mixers after
staggering through their first
one, past experience has
shown that Wahoo
first-yearmen are hard to
discourage

Mary Baldwin College in
Staunton is the closest girls'
School a scant 35 miles over
Aon Mountain equipped
with interstate 64 West most
of the way

If you are going to
Baldwin and change your
mind on the way, you can
turn north on Re outside
Stanton and continue another
0 miles Madison College in
Harrisonburg Madison
produces mostly liberal arts
majors and teachers with a
heavy stress on liberal

Madison can also be
reached by driving north on
and cast on Re at
Ruckersville This weekend's
festivities at the teachers
college will feature a concert
and dance at the county
with Balt Deal and
the Rhondalls

Route 29 is also the first
leg of the trip to our sister
school. Mary Washington,
some 70 miles away in
Fredericksburg. From 29,
follow Rte. 3 east to the
college, carefully avoiding
speed traps a four-brew role
at least.

Farmville, which can be
reached by turning south on
Rte 15 from Rte. 250 east at
Zions Crossroad, features
Longwood College, but little
else. If you get lost on the
way, just ask any truck driver.

Sweetbriar College rests in
groves of dogwoods and
Pinkertons about 60 miles
south on Rte. 29, one of the
easier roads to travel in the
area, in Sweetbriar. Va

About five miles further on
Rte 29 one finds Randolph
Macon Womens College in
Lynchburg Randy-Mac boasts
an excellent academic
reputation and some of the
most liberal dating hours in
the state

For the most ambitious.
Hollins College in Roanoke
has a lovely campus and
sometimes a lovely student
body A six-pack roll, 115
miles away via Rtes 64 and
A Saturday night mixer
with a hand is scheduled this
weekend

So as not to ignore the first
year women, those who don't
see what they like the
University can choose from
the students at Washington
and ee. VMI or VPI

Probably the easiest and
safest way to meet these
gentlemen is to follow the
first yearmen to the mixers at
the various girls schools, where
there are usually three times
too many males for the female
sponsors
