Household Space Music

"You have to think first, 'I am the best. With
my instrument, I am the best.' Otherwise, you
might blow it."

Chatty Cooper, percussionist, doesn't
anticipate "blowing it". He and the remainder
of Virginia Beach's "Polyphony" plan to
demonstrate their brand of musical perfection
to the University community tomorrow night
in Cabell Hall. Sponsored by WUVA, the
group will present two sets, at 8 and 11, for a
near-nominal $1.50 admission.

Delaware natives, the Polyphony
five–Martin Ruddy, Chris Spong, Craig
Massey, Glenn Howard, and Chatty–now
confine their daily practice sessions to an
oceanfront haven at the north end of the
Beach.

The music epitomized by their first album,
"Without Introduction," as well as Craig's
new twenty-minute interpretation of Kahill
Gibran's "Out of Earth, Under the Sun," has
been characterized by manager Chuck Taylor
as "space"... although one female admirer
disagrees.

"Pushing it as 'space music' might make a
dollar, but I'd rather think of them as
contemporary classical music ans," she
explained.

Or as their sound engineer phrased it:
"We'll make Polyphony a household word."
