The Camblos Consignment

The agreement reached between the
Judiciary Committee, the Department of
Security, the Student Affairs Office, and the
local court is a laudable achievement which
should serve the best interests of all parties.

Under the new procedures, a security
officer will check the identification of a
student involved in minor misconduct and file
a report with the Security Department rather
than arrest the student. The Security
Department will notify the Judiciary
Committee directly in most misdemeanor
cases, rather than subject the student to an
arrest record.

An arrest record can be an onerous burden
to live with. The Judiciary Committee exists
for the sole purpose of handling disciplinary
problems among students and is empowered
to take punitive action when it so chooses.
However, any Judiciary Committee
punishment is far less pernicious to a
student's ubiquitous record than would be an
arrest if his case went to the courts.

The Judiciary Committee, especially its
chairman Frazier King, deserves
congratulations for reaching this intelligent
agreement with the Department of Security.
That department, as well as the
Commonwealth's Attorney's office, should
also be commended and should be given every
measure of student support to follow through
with the proposal.

Not only does this procedure breathe life
into a University student government
organization that really needed to prove that
it merits existence, but it relieves overcrowded
court dockets of insignificant cases that can
easily be resolved "in-house." Thus, Mr.
Camblos's duties as Commonwealth's
Attorney and the duties of the Judiciary
Committee become clear and distinguishable.

Even more encouraging is the welcome
re-emphasis on student self-government. Mr.
Camblos has shown justifiable faith in the
Judiciary Committee and by doing so has
bolstered student faith in his judgment.
