Letters To The Editor
No Honor At Ticket Window
I have only been at the
University for a few months
yet I have observed something
that comes as quite a shock to
me. It seems to me that the
academic community has a
great amount of respect for the
Honor System while the
administration seems to
disregard it (but I suppose that
they feel that is irrelevant to
the cold realities of life).
When I arrived in
September, I didn't have a
ticket to the football game,
and I was advised by a
Counselor to purchase a regular
ticket at the gate. I bought a
ticket assuring that I would be
reimbursed by the Athletic
Dept. when I presented my
stub. Such was not the case. I
did not receive a dime of my
money back, because, I was
told, that the money was in
separate accounts, and that my
money had already been
divided with Navy. It seems to
me that I paid twice for that
game (both in fees and in
cash), and since the game was
not a sellout don't they still
owe me $6.00? The situation
concerning Basketball tickets
seems to me to be a similar
one. As I understand it every
student pays $22.00 of his fees
to the basketball division of
the Athletic Department,
which means that a student is
entitled to see every game (a
season ticket only costs
$20.00). Therefore, if the
Athletic Dept. only releases
3,800 student tickets (as it did
for the Maryland game), and
then sells the remaining tickets
aren't they getting paid twice
for some of those seats, and
cheating the students? It is
unfortunate that I can't give
the Administration
twenty-four hours to explain
its actions or ask it to leave the
University, but I do wish that
it would give some justification
for its seemingly dishonest
transactions.

Cheated Again
After being frustrated by
the lack of parking facilities,
the condition of Alderman
Library, the lack of classroom
space and the general feeling of
helplessness to remedy any of
these situations, we now find
ourselves manipulated out of
our rightful seats in University
Hall for U.Va. basketball
games. It was our
understanding that payment of
the comprehensive fee entitled
us to attend the basketball
games. Why can't we attend
the Maryland game on
December 8th?
Priority has been given to
season ticket holders over the
student body. Out of 8000
seats less than half have been
allocated for students. All
students who so desire should
be allowed to attend the
basketball games. The
administration has accused the
students of being elitists, but
what is more elite than denying
rightful admission to over
two-thirds of the student
body?

Dead Serious
When a French philosopher
is quoted in French to support
an argument for abolishing the
language requirement, the
generous reaction would be to
conclude that the writer is
pulling our leg. Unfortunately
for him, Mr. Walter
Bardenwerper seems to be dead
serious in the main body of his
article.
But he is so busy setting up
straw men and knocking them
over that he seems not to
notice the almost comical way
he defeats his own logic. What
Bardenwerper really does is
