University Critics Tie In Voting,
'Patton' & 'Wild Child' Cited

In the annual polling of
University of Virginia film critics,
"Patton" and "The Wild Child"
tied for best film of 1970.

To be eligible to vote, a critic
had to have reviewed a minimum of
five films for University media
during the calendar year 1970.
Those who took part in the voting
were Paul Chaplin, Steve Wells, and
Susan Hardwicke of The Cavalier
Daily, Dabney Carr of WTJU-FM,
and former CD film critic Carl
Erickson.

The voting was done on a
five-point gradation scale, with five
points going to each critic's first
choice, four for second, three for
third, two for fourth, and one for
fifth. "Patton" and "The Wild
Child" each received a total of ten
points, the former without a first
place vote and the latter on the sole
basis of two first place tallies.
Following these films were
"Catch-22" with eight points and
"M*A*S*H" and "Brewster
McCloud" each with seven.

In other categories, George C.
Scott was named by a majority of
the five-member panel as best actor
for his portrayal of "Patton." Other
split-voting winners were Carrie
Snodgress as best actress for "Diary
of a Mad Housewife," John Mills as
best supporting actor for "Ryan's
Daughter," Sally Kellerman as best
supporting actress for "M*A*S*H,"
Francois Truffaut as best director
for "The Wild Child," Francis Ford
Coppola and Edmund North for
best original screenplay for
"Patton," Robert Anderson for
best screenplay based on material
from another medium for "I Never
Sang For My Father," and Robert
Altman as director most promising
for "M*A*S*H" and "Brewster
McCloud." "The Wild Child"
received a majority vote as the best
foreign film.
