Whitehead Leads Faculty

By STEVE GRIMWOOD

Every new year brings with
it an increase in enrollment and
a corresponding increase in the
number of people to deal with
the influx of new students.
This year has been no
exception.

The major administrative change
during the summer was the
appointment of Dexter W.
Whitehead to the post of dean of
the Faculty of Art and Sciences,
replacing David A. Shannon, who
became vice president and provost
of the University on July 1.

In addition to his new
position, Mr. Whitehead is also the
dean of the Graduate School of
Arts and Sciences and director of
the University's Center for
Advanced Studies. He will serve as
both dean of Faculty and the
Graduate school for one year.

Appointments

Other new appointments include
Robert F. Bryan, associate
professor of chemistry, who will
serve as an associate dean for
admissions in the Graduate School
of Arts and Sciences. Alfred
Fombach, professor of government
and foreign affairs, will be associate
dean for fellowships, while Samuel
P. Maroney, associate professor of
biology, will be assistant to the
dean, along with John H. Moore
from the Department of
Economics.

Elzinga Named

In the College, three new
association deans have been named.
Kenneth Elzings, assistant professor
of economics, will be taking
over the Page-Emmet association,
while Fred Diehl, assistant
professor of biology will be
counseling the members of the
Echols-Humphreys association.
Harry Gamble, a visiting professor
of religion, will be in charge of
special scholars. All of the
association deans and Irby Cauthen,
dean of the College, have a very
optimistic outlook toward the
coming year, calling this year's
entering class "one of the finest" in
the history of the University.

Dean Cauthen added that the
University has adjusted to the new
curriculum and that the association
deans will be stressing the
flexibility of the curriculum when
conferring with the incoming
first-year students.

New Assistant Deans

Two new assistant deans of
students have been named to the
Office of Student Affairs. Jane
Ikenberry will be working with
student activities and programs. A
former associate dean of student

affairs at Elizabethtown College in
Pennsylvania and member of the
Executive Board of Pennsylvania
Women Deans of Counselors she
said she hopes to see the formation
of programs for women, and
expressed interest in the promotion
of coeducational student activities
in general.

Jacobs Added

Linwood Jacobs will also join
the Student Affairs office. In
addition to his general duties, he
will be a resident dormitory advisor
and will work with minority
students. Mr. Jacobs is the former
principal of Woodville Elementary
School in Richmond and the head
of social work for the public school
system of Richmond.
