Traditional Songs

Traditional Songs

Below are two of the best-known songs
of the University. The rendition of "The
Good Old Song" after a Virginia touchdown
and at the end of the game, win
or lose, in Scott Stadium, or the fuzzy
shouting of "From Rugby Road to Vinegar
Hill" over (or after) a succession of cold
beers, etc., is a tradition in the true
University style.

The Jeffersonian comments that
although it is not the official Alma Mater,
"The Good Old Song" has become "th
traditional Alma Mater" over the years.
No alumni reunion passes without an
emotion-filled singing-or two or three
of it.

The rollicking lyrics of "From Rugby
Road..." are the result of spontaneous-composition
over the years and have been
known to vary from the version presented
here.

The Good Old Song

That good old song of Wah-hoo-wah
We'll sing it o'er and o'er
It cheers our hearts and warms our blood
To hear them shout and roar.
We come from old Virginia
Where all is bright and gay;
Let's all join hands and give a yell
For dear old U. Va.
What though the tide of years may roll
And drift us far apart;
For Alma Mater there'll still be
A place in every heart.
In college days we sing her praise.
And so when far away.
In memory we still shall be
At the dear old U. Va.
Wah-hoo-wah
Wah-hoo-wah
Univ. V. Virginia; Univ. V.
Hoo-rah ray!
Hoo-rah ray!
Ray! Ray!
U. Va.

From Rugby Road. . .

From Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill,
We're gonna get drunk tonight,
The faculty's afraid of us,
They know we're in the right,
So fill your cups, your loving cups,
As full as full can be,
And as long as love and liquor last,
We'll drink to the U. of V.
Refrain:
Oh. I think we need another drink! Heh!
I think we need another drink! Heh!
I think we need another drink! Heh!
I think we need another drink! Heh!
To the glory of the U. Va.
From Carrols to the Corner,
We will drink our beer and shout,
And if the faculty objects,
They can only throw us out,
So fill up your cups, your loving cups,
As full as full can be,
And as long as love and liquor last,
We'll drink to the U. of V.
