Lacrosse Team Prepares
To Defend National Crown

illustration

CD/Jay Adams

Attackman Tom Duquette (21)

Next month fall workouts
will begin as Coach Glenn Thiel
and his NCAA champion
Virginia lacrosse team start on
the road to a successful defense
of the national title they won
back in June.

Ten members of the
championship squad have
exhausted their eligibility and
will not return Included
among those departing were
co-captains Jay Connor and
Bob Proutt, attackman Rick
Beach and star midfielder Pete
Eldredge.

Connor last year broke the
school total points record and
was an All-American Eldredge
was named the country's MVP
off his clutch performances in
the NCAA tourney and broke
the University record for goals
in a season.

On attack this season Coach
Thiel will probably start
high-scorers Chip Barker, the
creaseman, and Tom Duquette
in addition to Rick Bergland,
who's probably the favorite to
inherit Connor's spot.

Midfielders sure to see
action include Kevin Chase.
Greg Montgomery, John
Stalfort, Jim Ulman and Richie
Werner

On defense, All-American
Bruce Mangels returns along
with Boo Smith, Ed Spencer
and Ted Coburn. Tom Dawes,
back after a year's lay-off, is
also a contender. Goalies will
be Rodney Rullman and Scott
Howe.
