U. Union Features
Varied Entertainment

While many organizations
around the Grounds pride
themselves in being highly
selective in choosing their
members, one group, the University
Union, bases its success
on its broad membership.
Every university student is
automatically a member of the
Union, and it is this fact that
enables the Union to perform
its many services.

The University Union is not
a union at all, but an entirely
student- run group that provides
the student body and the
Charlottesville community
with activities, entertainment,
and services. These range from
theatre to lectures to blood
drives.

Perhaps the most popular activities
of the Union are in the entertainment
field. These include programs,
musical and theatrical, for
all tastes. While there is usually no
lack of activities on big weekends,
the Union tries also to provide
cultural opportunities for students
throughout the year.

In this light, the year-long Artist
Series is scheduled by the Union,
allowing University students to see
and hear the world's best musical
and theatrical performers. The
Series usually consists of six performances,
with a balance of classical
music, opera, ballet and drama.

The Union also sponsors lecture
programs, bringing to the University
special speakers of national
note. Last year students heard such
men as F. Lee Bailey.

Another annual activity is the
Fine Arts Contest, which encourages
students with a literary bent to
compete for cash prizes. Awards are
given for the best short stories,
photography, and films. The Union
also sponsors an art show and
auction for University artists.
