BP, Hobgood Co-Captains

Parkhill Heads Potent Attack

By FRAN MARKON

It seems a long way off
now, but in two and one half
short months, Head Coach Bill
Gibson and his Cavalier
basketball team will again take
to the University Hall courts
having already stated their
objectives of attaining the lofty
goals which just eluded them
during last year's successful
21-7 season.

"We won't be satisfied just
to sit on our laurels," vows Mr.
Gibson. An Atlantic Coast
Conference title was listed by
"The Hooter" as the team's
immediate goal. This will
require a jump of only one
position by the Cavs, who tied
for second in the ACC race last
year.

Co-captains this year are
Barry Parkhill and Jim
Hobgood, both fourth-year
men. Hobgood, a 6-4 forward
skilled at rebounding against
bigger men and possessed of an
awesome long-range jumpshot,
scored 12.2 points per game last
year and says he's totally
recovered from a bothersome
heel injury.

Parkhill, the Cavs' 6-4
backcourt ace, is coming off a
super season which saw him
win the ACC's Player of the
Year award and pace all league
scorers with a 21.6 average.
"Mr. BP", as he will be called
(almost unfortunately) more
than once this season, was on
several All-American squads
and made the alternate
Olympic team.

Practices will begin early in
the week of Oct. 15 and Mr.
Gibson heartily encourages all
prospective candidates for
sports on the varsity and JV
teams to stop at his U-Hall
office before then, especially if
the player is either an entering
first-year man or has never
tried out for a team here
before.

"This will probably be the
most offensive team we've had
since I've been here," said Mr.
Gibson, in his tenth year as
coach. He means offensive in a
basketball sense, of course, as
he can't see "any problems
with our ability to put the ball
in the hole."

"We're explosive,' Mr.
Gibson went on as he
explained that the offense he'll
use this year will involve an
emphasis on one-on-one
situations, the better to use his
plenitude of excellent
shooters.

In addition to Parkhill and
Hobgood, several other players
have to be considered top
scoring threats. Among them
are second-year forward Dan
"Gus" Gerard, third-year
center Lanny Stahurski,
second-year backcourt stickout
Andy Boninti and first-year
blue chipper Wally Walker,
who stands 6-6 and can play
guard or forward.

Two keys of Mr. Gibson's
are defense and desire and his
team includes many top
defenders. A pair of hustling
third-year guards, Al
Drummond and little Steve
Morris, stand out defensively
but the Gibson program
stresses team defense above
individual coverage.

Top reserves include
third-year forward Bob
McKeag, second-year big men
Dan Bonner and Spencer
Graham, and two more young
guards, second-year man Brian
Tully and first-year man Bob
Sefcik.

Fourth-year man Larry
Gerry, younger brother of an
ex-Cavalier star, will also
contend for a guard spot. Mr.
Gibson believes that this is the
season Larry will come into his
own. "All he needs is the
playing time," said the coach,
whose basketball philosophy
stresses the use of as many men
per game as is prudent.

The opener is December 2 at
home against Washington &
Lee.
