Deacons, UNC
May Pace ACC

Minus "ambitious" South
Carolina this year, the Atlantic
Coast Conference bears a new seven
team look this fall in its 19th
season of Saturday afternoon
excitement.

Member schools have scheduled
such outside opponents as
Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford,
Auburn, Penn State, and Georgia,
indicating the increased emphasis
on the league's gridiron program.
However, the intra- league play is
still of premier importance to ACC
ball clubs, and everyone will be out
to get defending champion Wake
Forest.

Led by quarterback Larry
Russell, Wake's Deacons won their
first Conference crown with a 5-1
log, rallying for five straight wins
after losing their ACC opener.

Field general of the tough Wake
triple option offense, the slick
Russell is a total offense leader and
is being billed as "the best veer
quarterback in the nation" by the
Deacon staff.

North Carolina faces a big
reconstruction job with the offense
as "Mr. Offense" Don McCauley is
gone, leaving a week passing attack.
All hopes for points ride on
quarterback Paul Miller's
questionable arm and Ike Oglesby's
running from the tailback slot.

Quarterbacked by Pennsylvania
schoolboy phenom Dennis
Satyshur, Duke's Blue Devils will be
realigning to cover the loss of the
exciting Leo Hart to Wes Chesson
combination. Fullback Steve Jones
is back to add to the respect he
earned in his first season.

Clemson's Hootie Ingram has 34
lettermen on hand including 15
starters. Tommy Kendrick will start
for the third year at the helm with
fullback Dick Bukowsky as his
main offensive tool.

Maryland has its young squad
from last year back in force with 37
lettermen of which 21 are only
juniors. Jeff Shugars will call the
signals again with Art Seymore as
his best ball carrier.

Interim coach Al Michaels faces
problems at North Carolina State as
much of the defense but little of
the offense returns. Depth will be a
sore spot even though quarterbacks
Dennis Britt and Pat Korsnick are
again on the squad.
