Stickmen Stocked With Vets

By Steve Giannini

Lacrosse mentor Buddy
Beardmore finished a successful
first year season with the Cavaliers
as his young team posted a fine
record of 5 wins and 4 losses in
collegiate play. The losses came to
the big four in lacrosse, Army,
Navy, Maryland, and Johns
Hopkins. Hopkins finally came out
on top as national champs when
they defeated the Terps to have an
undefeated season in collegiate
play.

Most of last year's strong and
well-conditioned team will be back
this year. Defenseman Pete Caples
graduated.

This year's midfielders should
consist of Tad Joerdans, Jim Potter,
Sandy Archibald, Ric Morrow,
Doug Hilbert, and Jim Carrington.
Several of these stickmen will help
out at the attack positions with
regulars Pete Kirk, Frank Quayle,
and Charlie Rullman.

In the past the Cavaliers have
been a team that looked to a strong
midfield to control the ball and
have the conditioning to run with
the opposition and capture the
ground balls. Physical stamina has
been particularly important with
the University's team because they
did not have the depth that other
teams had to make substitutions.

Star football halfback Quayle is
a potent scorer, at his attack
position and made honorable
mention on the All-American
Lacrosse team in his 2nd year. Last
season Quayle was lost for four
weeks due to mononucleosis and
did not get a chance to play in
some important games. By the time
he re-entered competition the
majority of the season was over and
he had to spend some time getting
back in shape.

With Quayle out, second
year man Charlie Rullman assumed
the role of high scorer. Against
UNC Rullman scored a season high
of 6 goals, and was the high scorer
for most of the games he played.

Defense has also been a strong
point with the stickmen.
Experienced defensemen Al
Kavasch and Peter Coy will be back
for their last season. Coy is an
outstanding defender who is
aggressive and quick and draws few
ties in his play. After the
season was over, he was chosen first
team All-American. It is interesting
to note that he was the only athlete
from the University to be chosen to
an All-American team.

Another defender deserving
recognition is goalie Jim Eustace.
Third year man Eustace

distinguished himself by his play
which was as good as any other
collegiate goalie in the country.

Tad Joerdans proved a very
capable face-off man as the
Cavaliers virtually dominated this
all important department. If the
team could get the ball and control
it then more shots could be taken.

This season looks promising, as
the team has had experience against
the best collegiate competition in
the nation as well as club teams
from Baltimore and Washington.
This year's co-captains, Peter Coy
and Jim Potter, could be leading a
team which will break into the
hierarchy of the big northern teams
to claim a national championship.
