Club Program Under Way

Gamecocks Hotly Pursue End Run of Kent Merritt

The University offers a wide
variety of sporting activity for
all students and faculty who
like the socializing aspect of
sport without the rigor and
formalities of varsity athletics.
These activities are grouped
under the heading of Club
sports.

A list of some of the clubs
follows, first giving the name of
the organization, then the
name of an officer prospective
members might wish to contact
and, finally, a short description
of the club's activities.

Bowling (Dave Butler)- Will
meet all year and conduct
weekly league on Thursday
afternoons at Mountain Bowl,
Barracks Rd. Shopping Center.

Chess (Don Connors)- Will
meet weekly, participants can
become nationally rated.

Crew- Competes against
many schools in East and
South and is coming off
excellent season. Everyone is
welcomed to participate.

Dance (Amy Barbie)Extension
of program offered
in Physical Education classes.

Fencing (Nathan
Schenker)- Competition and
instruction.

Field Hockey (Bev
Munson)- This fall, women's
team only.

Gymnastics- Daily practices
in Memorial Gym,
Olympic-type instruction will
be offered.

Handball- Competition.
"Challenge Ladder" rating
system employed.

Judo (Dick Swanson)-Year-long
competition and
instruction.

Karate (Fred Morton)- Two
clubs, one stressing offensive,
the other defensive, karate.

Lacrosse- Richmond-based
club team for the occasional
player.

Outing- Centered around
boats and the water. Meets all
year with pool privileges at
Memorial Gym.

Ping Pong- Meetings and
games based at Newcomb Hall
tables.

Rugby- Fills out at least
four teams (sides) each year
with players varying from
accomplished ruggers to rank
novices. Not for the
faint-hearted.

Sailing- Information posted
on bulletin board in Newcomb
Hall basement. Sailing is done
at Lake Monticello.

Scuba (Leroy Smith)- For
both beginning and advanced
divers. Beginners may earn
Scuba diving certificates.

Ski- Skiing will (hopefully)
be done at Bryce's Mountain.

Soccer- Year-round sport
with practices against Cavalier
varsity.

Tennis (Andy Beall)
Detinite for spring, a possibility
for fall.

Volleyball (Lowell Phillips)Began
only last spring, offers a
chance for competition.
