Burris Hopefully Eyes
Third Position Finish

With the return of six members
of last year's top eight, this year's
varsity tennis team hopes to match
or better its 14-3 mark of last
season and improve upon its third
place ACC finish.

The squad is led by Doug
Waterman, a fourth-yearman, who
played number two in 1971. Also
returning are fourth-yearman Herb
Beskin, third-yearman Dick Kaspers
and second-yearmen Jim Ratcliff,
Ron Swift, Frank Spratlin and Jim
Blair. All those returning had
winning percentages of .667 or
better.

This year's prospects are
brightened by the arrival of
first-yearmen Hoyt Murray, Don
Murray, Pete Adoph, Frank Hatten,
and Irving Cantor, all ranked in
their areas. Although tryouts are
open to all, Coach Gordon Burris
expects these to be the strongest
contenders for making the squad.

Commenting on the outlook for
the 1972 season, Coach Burris
stated that he does not make
predictions, explaining that he's
seen "too many coaches shot down
their predictions for great years."

He added that the schedule,
which includes a match with
eastern power Dartmouth and a trip
to Florida to take on Florida State,
the University of Florida and
Jacksonville, is one of the toughest
Virginia netmen have faced in
years. Also on the slate is the new
Big Five Tournament.

As for the ACC picture, Burris
expects UNC and Wake Forest,
strengthened by three junior college
transfers, to battle for the top spot.
Virginia, he said, would probably
end up in a fight for third with
arch-rivals Maryland and Clemson.
