University Soccer Team Opens '71 Season With New Coach

Jim Stephens Hopes To Guide Squad To Third Straight ACC Title

All eyes are on the future this
season as Coach Glenn Thiel looks
over the new lacrosse team roster.
Only three starting jobs have been
vacated by retiring fourth yearman,
but five All-Americans and a highly
touted group of rookies spice the
pot.

Last year's 11-2 intercollegiate
playoff squad returns intact with
the exceptions of goalie Al Hirsch,
first team All-American Tom
Schildwachter, a defensive standout
for the Cavaliers, and attackman
Rick Beach. Joining them on the
first team are fourth year
midfielder Pete Eldredge and senior
attackman Jay Connor, while
defenseman Bruce Mangels was
voted second team honors. Third
year attackman Tom Duquette and
fourth year midfielder Bobby
Proutt earned third team
All-America mention.

"Need A Goalie"

One of Thiel's first comments is
"What we really need is a goalie,"
and exhaustive recruiting has
provided him with some incoming
blue chippers in the net. One is
high school All—America Rod
Rullman, brother of former
Cavalier All-American Charlie
Rullman. Young Rullman was
All-Long Island and Scotty
Howe of the Gillman School in
Baltimore, will have a good shot at
winning the top job in fall
workouts.

New Faces

Newcomers in the midfield
include Richie Werner, another high
school All-American and All—Long
Island performer, Dave Driver of
Annapolis, Gary Koch of Annapolis
and Bill Morehead.

Headlining the first year attack
is Al Sadtler of Baltimore who
garnered All-M.S.A. honors in high
school.

On defense honorable
mention All-M.S.A. Bucky Sager,
All-M.S.A. Hooper Goldsboro, Bob
Smith, Ted Coburn, both of
Towson, Md. High School, Long
Island's Frank Etro, and Ed
Spenser could see action.

With the great wealth of
returning talent at every position
except in the goal, these first year
players will have to fight for their
spots on the squad. Third year
goalie John Gaughen is back but
will devote the fall to soccer.

Coach Thiel indicated that the
squad would be "strong on attack
because everybody is back." In
addition to Connor and Duquette,
"everybody" includes Chip Barker,
Dave Garman, Doug Tarring, Rick
Bergland, and John Eppler.
Defensive returnees are Tom
Dawes, a starter last year, Boo
Smith, Stewart Webb, and Mangels.
"Smith." said Thiel, "will probably
step in to start for Schildwachter.
We will have depth on the defense
this year, something we haven't
had."

Midfield Vets

Several topnotch midfielders are
back to complement Eldredge and
Proutt. Doug Cooper, a frequent
scorer last year returns as a
sophomore. Steve Nauss, Dick
Proutt, George Turner, and Jim
Ulman, all experienced performers,
make up the nucleus of the three
midfields.

Ranked number one throughout
the season last year, the returnees
have big shoes to fill during this
spring's campaign.
