Unbeaten Booter About To Kick In Victory Early Last Fall

Cavaliers Recorded 9-1-2 Ledger On Way To ACC Championship

ACC champions, Virginia
state champions, and Eastern
representatives to the NCAA
Tournament - these are the
credentials with which the
1969 Virginia soccer team will
perpetuate its glorious 9-1-2
season in Cavalier annals. Most
of that outstanding squad returns
for the '70 season, but
only the next few months will
tell for sure whether Virginia
has reached permanent status
as a national soccer power.

The most important losses
from last years team will definitely
involve All-Star goalie
Dan Abramson and his fellow
tri-captains Mike Sorenson and
John Taylor, but the most recent
blow to the squad has
been the announcement that
Coach Gordon Burris must retire
to the part time post of
general manager due to obligations
in the Admissions Office.
Ample experience should
be provided however in the
persons of previous assistants
Jim Lewis and Ian Faulconer.

Apart from those basic problems
the rest of the team
boasts a bevy of talented lettermen
and a few first-year hopefuls.
Experience is there in the
offensive line with inside forward
and tri-captain Jay
Connor leading a strong contingent
of six lettermen. Fred
McGlynn and Phil Crane performed
strongly at wing in
1969 and John Mertens, Frank
Sterjevic, and Steve Kennelly
provided scoring punch up the
middle.

At halfback second-year
men Jay Ziehl and John
Gaughn seem to be the leaders
of the field, while fullbacks
Dave Bowman and Tom
Showalter will help defend the
goal for Danny Abramson's replacement
whoever he may be.
Bowman and Showalter will
serve as tri-captains along with
Jay Connor.

Altogether the prospects
look good if Co-coaches Lewis
and Faulconer can fill in a few
vacancies with some first-year
men and other returnees and
there should be no reason why
the 1970 Cavalier booters
should not equal their championship
performance of '69.
