Wahoo Crew Expands Further

In just three years, the
University of Virginia Rowing
Association, under the leadership of
coach Tim Kerr, has risen to a place
of prominence among the
intercollegiate crew teams in the
East.

Pitted against 33 of the best
crews in the East in the Dad Vail
Regatta in Philadelphia last May,

the Cavaliers came away with a
respectable eleventh place finish. In
her heat, Virginia finished second
behind a powerful Purdue squad to
progress to the semi-finals.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts
of the team members, and some
residents of Albemarle County loyal
to the sport, the crew has acquired
a new boat house and a two
thousand dollar custom-made eight
man shell. The club will soon boast
a six boat flotilla of four "eights"
and two "fours".

The crew depends almost
entirely on its own initiative for
raising funds. By Athletic
Department standards, it is not an
officially recognized sport, and it
exists as a club sport, the same
status held by the Rugby and Polo
teams. Fortunately, although not
enjoying the benefits of the
Athletic Department funds, the
crew has enjoyed the same success
in competition experienced by the
other club sports.

During the winter while the
Rivanna River was still frozen over,
and actual rowing practice was
impossible, the crew members kept
in shape with a rigorous weight
lifting schedule and long distance
running. The team took a daily five
mile jaunt to the shores.
