Booters, New Coach
Seeking Third Crown
By DOUG DOUGHTY
Defending state and
conference soccer champs, the
Cavaliers kick off the
upcoming season, September
26, against Roanoke College,
with whom they tied for the
state crown in 1969.
The Cavaliers undertake one
of their most ambitious
schedules in recent history,
under the tutelage of Jim
Stephens, who was originally slated
to coach last year, but was unable
to join the athletic staff until the
spring season, when he assumed the
reigns of the golf squad.
Stephens has two
graduate-school assistants, Bruce
Parkhill and Bob Knauff, each with
excellent credentials. Mr. Parkhill
twice made first team All-America
in collegiate soccer competition at
Lockhaven State. A relative of
basketball star Barry Parkhill, Bruce
also excelled in basketball while at
Lockhaven, Knauff, head soccer
coach at Johns Hopkins the past
two years, brings experience to his
position as assistant.
Virginia returns many of the
stars of last year's championship
squad, although center-half Dave
Bowman and right-fullback Tom
Schildwachter will be hard to
replace. Nine starters from last
year's club are now vying for their
old positions in early practices.
Tri-captains for the ensuing
campaign will be Jay Connor, also a
standout in lacrosse, who scored
five goals and contributed two
assists last season at his forward
position; center fullback Ed Marks,
and two-goal scorer Jay Ziehl at
center halfback. Ziehl scored the
winning goal in last year's 2-1 win
over William and Mary for the state
crown.
The Cavaliers' talent doesn't end
with this triumvirate. Chip Williams
will return at fullback to help
compensate for the loss of
Schildwachter. Forwards Andy
DuPont and Phil Crane come back
to the front line where each netted
three scores in 1970 action and
Steve Kennelly and Fred McGlynn
are expected to start again as
attackers.
Sam Crosby, who led all Virginia
scorers with eight goals last year
returns at right half for the
Cavaliers, while Dave Peyton, a
two-sport letterman last season,
lends added depth at the
left-halfback spot. Goalie may be a
trouble spot, as neither Jim Glaser
nor Alex Boniewicz returns. The
nets are expected to be manned by
a first-year man.
Fresh off last season's 8-2-1
record, the booters face state
contenders Roanoke and William
and Mary, each on the University
Hall Field. The Indians come to
Charlottesville, October 27, while
Roanoke is the Cavaliers' first
opponent. Maryland and North
Carolina are perennial contenders in
league action.
When Virginia travels to Navy
for a match November 6 it will be
the first time in current history that
the two teams have met in soccer.
