Harriers Experienced,
Prospects Promising

It seems fairly safe to say
cross-country 1970 should be as
good as cross-country 1969. This is
because returning to this year's
squad from last year's 3-5 team that
captured fourth in the conference
are six of the top seven runners.

Last year's captain Rick Katz is
the only missing member, having
graduated. Katz, who ran in the
number one slot will be missed
heavily, but the other six seem to
have gained heavily due to last
year's rigorous cross-country and
track schedule.

This year's number one man will
be Phil Meyer, a second-yearman
from Lexington, Kentucky. Meyer
has turned in a 9:23 two mile en
route to three miles and by the end
of track season last year was
beating Katz consistently.

The other five returning
members will be vying for the next
five slots along with first-yearman
Mike Pace, a product of Lane High.
These five returnees are Brew
Barro Jerry Hart, Frank Andrew,
Mayo Tabb, and Mike DeCamps.

Barron, Hart, and DeCamps are
all half milers who did well last
season in the two-mile relay. Barron
was last year's number three man,
Hart last year's number four, and
DeCamps last year's number four,
and DeCamps last year's number
seven.

Tabb and Andrew are longer
distance runners in track, and were
number five and six respectively
last year. Andrew has run a 4:24
mile while Tabb did a good job in
crucial meets last year.

The two-a-day workouts have
already started, and the schedule is
for much heavier running than last
year. Early season workouts average
75 miles a week.

Also the team gets a good break
with the schedule this year as the
first meet is not until October the
second with State and Carolina in
Raleigh. By this time hopefully all
the early season shin splints and
sores will have a good long time to
get worked out.
