Welfare Group Holds Conference

The Virginia Welfare Rights Organization
will hold a student conference at the
Westminster Presbyterian Church, 190 Rugby
Road with students attending from all Virginia
colleges.

Stephen L. Pevar, a third year law student at
the University and Director of the Welfare
Rights Project of the Law School's Legal
Assistance Society, stated that the purpose of
the meeting is "to educate students as to the
public assistance programs in the state and the
nation and to problems relating to the poor"
and "to ask students if they would like to help
with the organization in any number of ways to
be outlined at the conference."

Mr. Pevar said that the group is a
"grass-roots organization" made up of poor
people with the aim of unifying other poor
people. He added that students can come at any
time during the week-end "to be educated
about what's happening in the nation's poverty
programs."

A letter from the organization to students
stated, "Attending our conference will not
necessarily commit you to working for our
goals; for those who are not ready to become
active we hope to provide a relevant
educational experience." The meetings will
begin Saturday at 11 and end at 5.
