Berkeley Police Arrest Alumnus
On Firebombing, Drug Charges

According to a recent story in the Virginia
Weekly, Steve Detwiler, a university graduate
and a former staff member of the Virginia
Weekly and the Quicksilver Times has been
arrested in Berkeley, California, on charges
including a charge stemming from the firebombing
of the Charlottesville draft board in
September of 1968.

Reports from California indicate that Mr.
Detwiler was arrested also on drug charges,
along with several other people from the
Berkeley community in which he had been
living.

Although the police were unable to prosecute
the drug charges, they learned that a
warrant charging Detwiler with destruction of
federal property in excess of $100 had been
issued in Charlottesville in August 1970. Mr.
Detwiler was retained and put under $26,000
bond.

The United States District Court in Charlottesville,
however, had no information regarding
the arrest of Mr. Detwiler.
