Foreign Service Examination
Scheduled For December 5

Any student who is interested in a
career in the foreign service and wants to
take the competitive examination for
such a career should pick up application
forms from the Office of Placement, 5
Minor Hall, today.

The applications for the tests must be
postmarked no later than today for
students to be properly registered for the tests.

The tests, which are to be given on
December 5 in many other cities besides
Charlottesville, will decide which students can
serve as foreign service officers for the State
Department or the United States Information
Agency.

The only eligibility requirements for the test
is that applicants be between 21 and 31 years
old as of December 5. Students who have
finished their junior year of college but are only
20 years of age are also eligible.

No formal educational requirements exist
for the test, but the government recommends
that students have a broad education and have a
facility in at least one useful language other
than English for advancement.

Applicants must indicate on the forms
whether they wish to work for the State
Department or the USIA.

The written test is only the first of five steps
in the selection process. Those applicants who
pass the written exam must then take an oral
test and a medical exam.

A student who is appointed to the foreign
service will be assigned abroad after a short
training period in Washington.
