Area Two-Year College Opens Soon

A community college in central
Virginia, headed by a graduate of the
University's School of Education, will
begin classes next fall with an anticipated
enrollment of 500.

Piedmont Virginia Community
College will join the state's growing
two-year community college system in
the 1971-1972 academic year, according
to Harold J. McGee, who was named
president of the new college last August.

Mr. McGee discussed the school,
which is still unbuilt, at a meeting of the
Jefferson Professional Guidance, Association,
according to The Daily Progress.

The college will serve Charlottesville,
Albemarle County, and four surrounding
counties, accepting all students with a
high-school diploma or the equivalent.

Mr. McGee told the group that the college's
present staff of three will seek approval of the
proposed curriculum next month, and in
December application forms will become
available. The school will hire teachers and
counselors in January.

The college will be located at the
intersection of Interstate 64 and Route 20, near
Charlottesville.

High-school counselors, local industrial
firms and the Virginia Employment
Commission will cooperate in designing the
curriculum for the new community college.

The academic program will concentrate on
technical education which will satisfy local job
market requirements.
