Gartlan Wins Scholarship Award

Michael Gartlan, a City Editor for The
Cavalier Daily, has been accepted into the
1971 Newspaper Fund Internship
Program for the upcoming summer, it was
learned yesterday.

The Newspaper Fund encourages
careers in newspaper journalism by
offering summer internships and
scholarships to interested college juniors.
The Fund is sponsored by Dow Jones and
Company, publisher of The Wall Street
Journal, The National Observer and
Barron's National Business and Financial
Weekly.

Mr. Gartlan now becomes the
fifteenth staff member of The Cavalier
Daily to be chosen as an intern since the
program began in 1960. As of last year, the
University ranked eighth nationally of those
colleges who have produced the most interns.

Mr. Gartlan, a third-year student from
Alexandria, Virginia was one of 43 persons
named as winners of reporting internships. The
winners were selected from over 500 applicants
nationally.

Mr. Gartlan joins Peter Shea as the second
staff member to be selected for the program
from The Cavalier Daily this year out of the 43
national winners.
