Student Given
3 Year Sentence

A 20-year-old University drama
student was given a three year suspended
sentence today in Judge Lyttelton
Waddell's Albemarle Circuit Court for
growing marijuana in his garden at
Cismont. The suspension of the sentence
is conditional on good behavior and
refraining from further use of marijuana.

Donald Gordon Stevens Jr. had
entered a plea of guilty to the charge,
telling the court that he was growing more than
two dozen marijuana plants for the exclusive
use of himself and his visiting friends, and that
he was not in the business of selling the drug.

Sgt. C. L. Bradley of the Virginia State
Police testified that he recovered about $2,000
worth of fresh and cured marijuana in a raid on
a garden and cottage owned by Mr. Stevens on
Sept. 10.

Mr. Stevens was placed on three years
probation.
