Council Picks
Election Head
The lack of communication and
cohesion among the departments of the
graduate school was discussed as the
newly established Graduate School of
Arts and Sciences Council held their first
meeting last Thursday night.
The Council, provided for by the
recently adopted graduate school constitution,
is composed of student representatives
from the various graduate departments,
the executive officers of the graduate
school government, and the student council
representatives of the graduate school.
Concerned primarily with defining its role in
the University, the Council's first meeting
turned its attention to the upcoming graduate
school elections. Council chairman, Carter
Morris, voiced the belief that the Council could
work to encourage broader student participation
in the elections, as well as to prevent the
confusion that surrounded the notably disorganized
balloting of last year.
Focusing on this problem, the Council
established an elections committee under the
chairmanship of John Atkinson, charged with
presenting an elections proposal at the next
Council meeting, scheduled for April 9.
The next order of business was the general
concern among the Council members about the
lack of knowledge as to the administrative
framework of the graduate school. A suggestion
was made that Dean Dexter Whitehead be
secured to discuss this administration operation
at the next meeting.
It was further proposed that at a later
meeting the Council consider the possibility of
having a graduate student appointed to the
graduate Committee.
