BSF Stresses
New Structure

Unity and a more formal
organizational structure will be the main
goals of the Black Students for Freedom
(BSF) during the coming months under
the leadership of newly elected president
John Thomas.

Mr. Thomas, a second-year student in
the College, stressed this goal and the
continuing role the BSF will have to play
as black admissions at the University
increase.

With more black students attending
the University in coming years, the BSF will
need a more formal structure so as to provide a
united consensus among black students. In Mr.
Thomas's words: "Whatever we take on, there
must be greater unity among black students at
the University."

Mr. Thomas said he believed that Elizabeth
Johnson. Assistant Dean of Admissions and the
BSF's new advisor, will be extremely helpful in
the organizational area because of her
experience in the Admissions Office, and her
earlier work with government programs.

"Making black people in Virginia consider
the University of Virginia as a possible place for
higher education" is one of the roles of the BSF
Mr. Thomas sees as continuing for some time.

Lunzy D. Britt, a second-year man and the
new vice-president of the BSF, was
characterized by Mr. Thomas as "a dedicated
black man." Other officers elected at last
night's meeting were Gwen Jones, a first-year
law student, who was elected secretary, and
Gordon Witcher, a first-year student who will
serve as treasurer.
