Hapless Hoopsters Hit
Home Hardcourt Tonight

Returning from a fruitless excursion
to Philadelphia and the University of
Pennsylvania, the Virginia cagers open
their University Hall campaign tonight
against the VMI Keydets.

Coach Bill Gibson's basketball squad,
standing 0-3 on the young season, seeks
to burst into that elusive win column against an
eager Keydet contingent that currently posts a
1-2 mark.

The Cavaliers will take the court at 8 p.m.
following the debut of the Cavayearling eagers
at 5:55. Coach Dick DiBasio's first-year men
open their season against the VMI Rats in an
effort to warm up the floor for Chip Case and
company.

VMI likes to use a similar offensive attack to
that of the Cavaliers a slow-down, ball
control type of game. Mr. DiBasio scouted the
crew cuts in Annapolis and reports, "The VMI
Keydets rely on six players to do the job for
them."

Jerry Renfro and John Thomas lead from
the backcourt and are currently averting 19 and
15 points a game respectively. For VMI, Jim
Sefrick, a 6-4 junior, and Fred Allison, at 6-6,
"do a yeoman job on the boards. Jan Esnberg
lends to the attack from his forward spot at 6-4
height.

Chip Case, Bill Gerry, and Kevin Kennelly
spark the Cavalier effort, with a lot of help
from second-year man Scott McCandlish, and
third-year man John Hill.

The Cavayearlings open University Hall
action this evening at 5:55 followed by the
varsity competition at 8. Both games feature as
opposition the crew cuts of Lexington. Looking
ahead the Cavaliers confront Frank McGuire's
heralded South Carolina Gamecocks Saturday
night in fair Charlottesville.
