'Music Shakespeare'
Termed Theme Of Concert
This Friday, the University
Singers will hold a concert in Cabell
Hall beginning at 8:30 p.m. Donald
Loach, Assistant Professor of Music
and Director of The University Glee
Club, will conduct the Singers. The
University Singers are made up of
members of the faculty and members
of their families.
"Music of Shakespeare" is the
theme of the concert, and this will
include various forms of music. The
program will include both choral
and instrumental music with various
types of each kind. In the
choral part of the concert, the
Singers have planned rounds, madrigals,
and solos.
"Collegium Musicum" is the
title of a main portion of the
concert. This will include a concert
of strings, a tenor solo, a performance
by a harpsichordist, and a
few madrigals. The music to be
used in the concert is both secular
and sacred.
Mrs. George Kinnear, a member
of the University Singers, reported
that the "Messiah Sing-In" was very
successful. The sing-in was held on
December 18 and drew a crowd of
over 200 people. In view of the fact
that the program was held on the
evening of the last day of school
proceeding Christmas vacation,
those in charge felt that the crowd
was good.
Mr. Loach was in charge of the
program. A small string ensemble
accompanied the singers, and the
main song featured at the sing-in
was "Handel's Messiah." Everyone
seemed to enjoy the program very
much and many expressed hope
that it would be repeated next year.
