Social Fee Increase Accepted
For Upperclass Residents

By GEORGE LYON

Upperclass dormitory
residents approved a measure
last week to raise the social fee
of all upperclassmen living in
University housing from $2 to
$5.

The purpose of the fee
increase is to "provide the
dormitory governments and
the resident staff programs
with adequate funds to
establish a budget to generate a
continuing social program for
the dormitory residents,"
according to a prepared
statement signed by Gail
Hughes, past president of the
Association of Resident
Councils (ARC) and Chris
Pikrallidas, Senior Resident.

"The fee would definitely
enhance a needed co-educational
social environment within the
dormitory community," they
said.

The measure was passed by
a 59 per cent majority of the
ARC.

The Residential Activities
Fee Committee "felt that more
resources were needed and that
adding the fee to the housing
bill would expedite its
collection," Miss Hughes and
Mr. Pikrallidas said.

Seventy-five per cent of the
proposed fee will go into the
ARC treasury while the other
25 per cent will be distributed
among the dormitory senior
residents.

Miss Hughes and Mr.
Pikrallidas said they hope the
first-year class would also favor
a similar measure and that the
Board of Visitors will approve
the ARC action.
