Bike Committee Plans
Area Traffic Study

By SUZY LAWSON

The Student Bicycle.
Traffic and Parking Committee
plans to study "some radical
changes" for traffic and
parking in the lower
McCormick Road area, the
Committee announced
yesterday.

Limiting vehicular traffic
and establishing workable bike
lanes will be a primary concern
of the Committee this Spring

Suggestions have already
been submitted to make the
Emmet Street bridge one way
or to remove traffic from the
bridge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Committee member Kathl
Craig said.

In cooperation with the
Charlottesville Bicycle
Committee, the student
committee also plans to look
into a coordinated system of
bike registration

Bike registration will be
"Basically the same as it is
now," Miss Craig said. "There
will still be a fee, although it
will probably be less than it is
now. The sticker will most
likely be permanent."

Requires Safety Inspection

"The city might require a
safety inspection." Miss Craig
added. "A short test of the
rules of the road may be
necessary before registration
can be completed."

There will be only one
registration because the city
and the University will have an
identical system of registration,
she claimed. "This will
hopefully cut down on theft.
At least, it will be easier to
trace stolen bicycles"

Coordinates Bike Lanes

Bike lanes on Rugby Road
and other main arteries into
the University are being
"seriously considered" by both
committees to coordinate with
new bike lanes on the Grounds.

The problem of erosion of
the Grounds caused by
bicycles, especially around
Newcomb Hall and the dorms,
will also be considered.

In the past, the student
committee has studied
automobile traffic on
McCormick Road in front of
Clark Hall. This Spring, "the
University Traffic and Parking
Committee will consider the
removal of all automobile
traffic on that portion of
McCormick Road."
