Committee Seeks End
Of Clark Hall Parking

By SANDRA DIVINE

The Bicycle Club
Sub-Committee of the
University Traffic and Parking
Committee will propose its
plan that will alleviate the
bicycle traffic problems on the
Grounds to the committee
tonight. The plan calls for the
removal of all automobile
traffic and parking in the area
past the Law School, from the
intersection of Newcomb and
McCormick Roads to the bus
gate by the West Range.

"On this hill there is no way
to have bicycles, pedestrians,
traffic and parking at peak
times. We must remove the
automobiles," said Committee
chairman and Student Council
Secretary Bill Huyett.

"Included in the plan is the
removal of parking in front of
the Chemistry and Physics
Buildings and the
establishment of six foot wide
bicycle lanes on either side of
the road in the direction of the
traffic where the road is wide
enough," Mr. Huyett said.

This plan is the culmination
of several weeks of bi-weekly
meetings to find a solution to
the bicycle traffic problem and
discover a way to minimize the
number of accidents that have
been occurring Mr. Huyett
said.

In a letter to the Committee,
Student Health Director James
L. Camp cited the number of
"bicycle accidents that have
resulted in injuries serious
enough for us to be aware of
them."

He said there were 14
accidents in all of last year,
three during Summer School,
and 22 during the period of
September 8 through October
26 of this year.

"There were at least two
severe injuries in this period
that resulted from bike to bike
collisions," Dr. Camp said.

Also proposed by the
committee are six pedestrian
crosswalks. "There is a real
need for pedestrian control,"
Mr. Huyett said. "Pedestrians
will be asked to use these
crosswalks. There might be
some serious pedestrian injuries
if something isn't done."
