Cheerleaders Sponsor 'Beer Bonfire' Rally;
Coach Lawrence Cites University Support
By BOB MAHONEY
In an attempt to heighten
school spirit for the Maryland
game and to get the adrenalin
flowing for a big weekend, the
University Cheerleaders
sponsored a "Beer Bonfire"
last night in the east parking
lot of Scott Stadium.
"The main purpose of this
beer and bonfire bash is to
throw up interest against our
chief rival," said cheerleader
Paul Garvey. Mr. Garvey added
that the spirit here at the
University is unique. "The
spirit here is different. The
University student has to learn
to support his team during
good and bad, not just when
things are going good. As the
University grows in
enrollment, the spirit will grow
more exuberant."
Commenting on this
"spontaneous event," Mr.
Garvey said that this was the
first such rally sponsored by
the cheerleaders in a long time
and was an attempt by the
cheerleaders to lessen criticism
of them in the past.
Yelling to the 400-500
students who had come by
9:55 p.m., Mr. Garvey asked,
"Where else can you throw
away one can of beer and get
another can free?" The
cheerleaders provided 60 cases
of beer.
Speaking in the shadows of a
15, foot high bonfire
constructed by Mr. Tilly
Wright and his grounds crew,
Coach Don Lawrence
expressed his appreciation for
the support the University has
given the team throughout the
year. Mr. Lawrence seemed to
agree with the statement by
defensive captain Billy
Williams that, "We should have
these type of things more
often. Your support was
instrumental in the victory
over Tech."
