Honor Poll Probes Opinion

The Honor Committee has submitted
a comprehensive questionnaire to 10 per
cent of the student body containing forty
four questions dealing with the scope and
effectiveness of the Honor System and the
Honor Committee.

"A random poll of students from every
school in the University will give the
Honor Committee a clear understanding
of the way students feel about issues
regarding the Honor System and its
application," stated Dave Bowman,
vice-president of the College and chairman of
the Poll Committee.

Of the 1,082 students who were sent
questionnaires on April 12, only 580 have so
far returned answers. A follow-up letter is
presently being sent to the remaining students
in order to obtain the highest possible
percentage of answers.

A covering letter mailed with the
questionnaire stated that, "In recent years the
Honor Committee has become increasingly
conscious of its need to communicate with a
rapidly growing student body, ...that is, the
necessity that the members of the Committee
be aware of the attitudes and opinions of
University students concerning our Honor
System."

"The results of the University opinion poll,"
said Mr. Bowman, "will point our directions for
change, if change is necessary."

The questionnaire dealt with the effects of
growth of the University on the Honor System;
which organization has the power to instigate
change in the System; the penalty of dismissal
and the general scope of the Honor System,
especially with regards to lying, cheating and
stealing.
