Gregg To Seek Parking Solution

By Linda Eichelbaum

John B. Gregg, a former instructor at
the Judge Advocate General's School, has
been named the manager of traffic and
parking at the University. He will be
responsible for the policies concerning
traffic, parking, and transportation.

The appointment of Mr. Gregg fulfills
the first step called for in a traffic

engineering report which outlines the
traffic needs of the University. He will
work with the firm, Kimley-Horn, which
is making a second study to determined
how to apply the original proposals.

Mr. Gregg will also work with the
Charlottesville and Albemarle County officials
in coordinating traffic planning with the
community.

When asked about the present situation at
the University, Mr. Gregg said, "Its bad." He is
presently investigating exactly what the
situation is and how it is being handled. He is
also searching for new ideas and has written to
about 30 other universities for information on
their various traffic systems.

He says that it will be at least another year
before a significant step can be made to relieve
the situation.

In agreement with the Office of Student
Affairs, Mr. Gregg expressed the belief that
parking lots should not be built upon existing
playing fields. However, he said that many of
the present parking lots can be better utilized
by changing the entrances and exits and by
employing angle parking.

Mr. Gregg added that the new Student
Council busing system is a worthwhile
experiment. He said that he is watching the
system and that he realizes its limited use to
date. This evening he will meet with the
Student Council Traffic Commission to discuss
its possible improvements.
