Financial Aid Housing Allotment

Edgar F. Shannon, President of the University,
yesterday approved a $150 increase in room
allotment for students on financial aid who have to
live in off-Grounds housing next year.

The University Committee on Scholarships
approved the increase from $350 to $500 per year
on February 5. Only those students on financial aid
who apply for and are denied University housing by
lottery or transfer after the housing allocation are
eligible to apply for the increase.

The deadline for housing applications is 5 p.m.
today. The Housing Office, located in the basement
of Page House, will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

According to Ralph Main, Director of University
Housing, no decision has yet been made as to how many
rooms in University dormitories will be allocated to
returning undergraduate students. Mr. Main explained that
no decision could be reached until the exact number of
first-year students for 1971-71 had been determined.

Approximately 760 returning students are currently
receiving financial aid. A rough estimate used by the
Committee on Scholarships was that 75 per cent of these
students will have to live off-Grounds next year.

Edgar A. Eldridge, Director of the Office of Financial
Aid, stated yesterday that through the increase in
allocation, the University is "recognizing the needs of
students as they actually exist."

Mr. Eldridge continued that the Financial Aid Office is
recognizing these new needs of students by attempting to
maximize the use of all available funds. He added that there
will be less funds needed to allocate for off-Grounds
housing as facilities for University housing increase.

The financial aid budget, which takes into account
tuition, fees, room and board, and books and expenses, has
previously allocated $350 per room for housing as most
returning scholarship students could obtain rooms in
University dormitories.

The Committee on Scholarships reported that a random
sample of rental costs indicated an average cost of $50 per
month for off-Grounds housing.
