Student Attacked
By Young Gang
On Rugby Road
George Martin, a second-year student
at the University was attacked in the
early morning hours Saturday by a group
of three young Negroes on Rugby Road
near Beta Bridge. It is the second incident
within two weeks in which University
students have been mugged.
Walking back to his apartment about
3:30 after taking his date home from a
fraternity party, Mr. Martin noticed three
men following him. They stopped him
and asked if he would give them fifty
cents. Mr. Martin refused and continued
walking, but he was hit from the rear by
one of them.
"I started to run, but another one ran in
front of me and hit me in the mouth with his
fists and elbows," said Mr. Martin. "In all I was
struck only five or six times, but that was
plenty to mess up my jaw" (which was broken
and had to be wired back into place).
Doug Trueheart, a fraternity brother of Mr.
Martin, passed by several minutes after the
incident and rendered immediate assistance.
Also chancing by were several city policemen
who helped get Mr. Martin to proper medical
care at the University Hospital
