HEW Discontinues Funds
To Student Demonstrators
By Ann Brown
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
The Department of Health, Education
and Welfare announced Tuesday that
federal aid had been discontinued for 440
students because of their participation in
disorders on college campuses.
Diane Sedicum, an assistant to the
director of the student financial aid
division of HEW, stated that 40 students
were removed from the aid rolls under
federal provisions while the other 400
had their assistance terminated by their college
administrations.
Institutions which administer federal aid to
students are required by law to report annually
the number removed from aid rolls.
Reports from all but 160 of the 2,390
institutions revealed that 86 schools have cut
off some funds since last June.
D. Alan Williams, the University's vice
president for student affairs and chairman of
the committee on Financial Aid and
Scholarships, said that he had no knowledge of
a report submitted by the University. He added,
however, that he was not aware of the
termination of aid to any student as a result of
his participation in disorders and that no one
had violated the exacting federal provisions.
According to Rep. Edith Green, D-Ore., who
has proposed legislation to cut off aid to
disruptive students, many larger schools where
campus disorders occurred have taken no action
against those involved in disorders.
Among those institutions that reported no
termination of student aid were Columbia
University, San Francisco State, the University
of California at Berkeley, Michigan State, the
University of Wisconsin, all of which had
experienced major disorders.
