University of Virginia Library

Graduation
Exercises Set

The University will hold its commencement
exercises the morning of June
7, rather than in the afternoon as has
been the pattern in recent years.

The Finals exercises will be shifted to 10
a.m. on the Lawn in front of Cabell Hall,
eliminating the baccalaureate services previously
held in the morning.

In recommending the change to the morning
hour, the University's committee on public
occasions cited such factors as easing travel
problems for working parents and fewer
chances of thunderstorms in the cooler morning
hours.

Included in the Finals program will be the
usual colorful procession down the Lawn, an
invocation by a clergyman father of a degree
candidate, an address by University President
Edgar F. Shannon Jr. and the conferring of
degrees by President Shannon.

More than 2,000 undergraduates and graduate
students are expected to receive degrees
from the University this June.
