Afro-American
Class Proposed

The Committee on Black Studies will
discuss the Development of Afro-American
studies at the University
tomorrow evening at 7:45 in 301 Wilson'
Hall.

Appointed by David H. Shannon in
September and composed of seven faculty
members and three students, the committee has
already met several times since its organization.

Under the chairmanship of Paul A. Gasten,
Associate Professor of History, it has already
proposed an introductory course in Afro-American
studies to be taught in the second
semester. The committee has also recommended
a broad search for a black scholar to head
an undergraduate Area Studies Program in
Afro-American studies, the details of which it is
presently working out.

According to Mr. Gaston, the committee
wished to review its work and define its
thinking at the meeting. Mr. Gaston added
"The committee wishes to hear from interested
students and faculty - to be able to have the
benefits of their thoughts on the development
of a comprehensive program in Afro-American
studies at the University.

"To this end," he continued, "we have
extended special invitations to the Student
Council, the Black Students for Freedom, and
the members of the College Curriculum
Committee. The meeting, however, is open to
the public, and we hope very much to have a
good turnout." The Committee expects to
continue its discussions throughout the year.
