Shannon To Give Speech
At June Finals Rites
University graduates will hear an
address by University president
Edgar F. Shannon Jr. at Finals
exercises Sunday, June 8.
President Shannon, recently
named to receive the 1969 Distinguished
Service Award of the
Virginia State Chamber of Commerce,
will speak after the traditional
academic procession down
the Lawn at 3:15 p.m.
Earlier in the day, at 10 a.m. on
the Lawn, the vice provost for
student affairs at the University of
Pennsylvania, John A. Russell Jr.,
will deliver the baccalaureate address.
Mr. Russell, an ordained
Methodist minister with a bachelor
of divinity degree from the University
of Edinburgh and a master of
sacred theology degree from Yale
University, was appointed to his
present post in 1968. Previously he
had been director of the Christian
Association at the University of
Pennsylvania, coordinator of the
Boston Redevelopment Authority's
non-profit housing program and
chaplain at Yale University and
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Class Day exercises at the
University will be held on the Lawn
Saturday, June 8. Traditionally
student awards, including the Algernon
Sydney Sullivan awards, "Z"
Society Book awards and departmental
awards are announced at
this time.
The Saturday schedule also
includes commissioning exercises
for ROTC candidates on the Lawn.
There are approximately 2,000
degree applicants this year at the
University.
