Pavilions Placed On Display

Pavilion X, the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Younger on East
Lawn, was on display to the public
yesterday as part of the Historic
Virginia Garden Week.

Garden Week is the last full
week in April every year and this
year commenced with the showing
of Pavilion 11 on Saturday and
Sunday.

In addition to the gardens which
are officially on display to the
University community year-round
one Pavilion will be open to the
public each day this week including
Saturday. There is no charge for
admission to any of the Pavilions
or their gardens.

Each of the Pavilions was
designed by Mr. Jefferson so that it
would be different and unique.
Although most of the Pavilions
have changed radically both inside
and out since they were completed
almost 140 years ago, they are yet
different and fascinating, each in its
own right.

The Pavilions originally were
not as large and imposing as they
seem to us now. Almost without
exception, they were all designed to
be three floor, six room houses.
The kitchen and dining rooms were
in the basement, classrooms on the
first floor, and the second story was
reserved for the living quarters of
the Professor and his family.

In addition to the Pavilions,
Carr's Hill, the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Edgar Shannon, will be open
to the public today and tomorrow.
There will also be an open house
and reception for students of the
University on Thursday beginning
at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Pavilion
was completed in the early 1830's
and the rear portion was added
about the turn of the century. The
original first floor classrooms have
now become the Dining room and
the Sitting room while Mr.
Younger has taken the rear central
room overlooking the gardens and
East Range for his study.

The one startling change is the
absence of the central fireplace,

shown in Mr. Jefferson's blueprints,
which would have been in the
middle of what is now the front
hall. The original plan omitted the
hall completely and had the two
rooms adjoining.

The following Pavilions will
each be open for one day this
week:

Pavilion . West Lawn, .
April 22.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Mayo.
Pavilion IV, Fast Lawn,
