Provost Denies Optional Classes;
Council Seeks Committeemen
University Provost Frank L.
Hereford Jr. announced yesterday
that all University classes will be
held today as scheduled and that no
classes "are scheduled optionally
and none cancelled."
The motion to make classes
optional passed at the Student
Council meeting held last Tuesday
night. The reason behind this
motion was to commemorate the
first anniversary of the death of Dr.
Martin Luther King and what he
represented as a crusader of racial
freedom.
Charles Murdock, the Student
Council representative who made
the motion in the meeting, said that
he went to tell President Shannon
of the Council's actions, but that he
was occupied with matters of the
Board of Visitors Meeting that is
being held this weekend.
A Memorial Service to Dr. King
will be held tonight at 7 at the Zion
Union Church on Preston Avenue.
At this time, the N.A.A.C.P. annual
membership drive will officially
begin.
In other business of the Student
Council, its committee chairmen
are now taking names of all those
interested in working on them. To
apply, a student should contact the
chairman of the committee on
which he wishes to serve.
The chairman of the Organizations
and Publications committee is
Jim Roebuck and the Political
Societies and Elections committee
is headed by Charles Murdock. The
Academic Affairs and Course Evaluation
Committee is led by T. J.
Jackson Lears, and Pat Saul directs
the Master Plan Committee.
The Health committee is headed
by Sam Robinson, the 3-2-2 committee
by Gene Angle, the Traffic
Control committee by Walker
Chandler, and the Alderman Road
committee by Ron Cass.
Rick Evans is chairman of the
Housing committee, Rodney Campbell
of the First-year committee,
Pat Saul of the Conference committee,
and Bud Ogle of the Library
committee.
The Nominations to the Board
of Visitors committee chairman has
not yet been selected. Anyone
wishing to serve on it should
contact the Student Government
office in Newcomb Hall.
