Dramatic Presentation
Highlights Prism Events
In an experimental dramatic
endeavor the Prism Coffeehouse
will present the comedy "Beyond
the Fringe," Friday night at 9. The
play, written by Messrs. Frost,
Moore and Cook, will be produced
by the Hampden-Sydney Jongleurs.
"Beyond the Fringe" is a comic
revue making satiric comments on
politics and society. The play has
had a successful history, taking first
prize at the Edinburgh Festival of
Drama in 1960.
After one season in London, this
revue made its American debut on
Broadway where it ran for two
seasons. The Hampden-Sydney
Jongleurs have recently been begun
performing this work and have had
several successful showings around
the state. The hour and a half
production, a series of skits, has
been compared in content to the
movie "The Committee."
Following the play, music will be
provided by the coffeehouse staff.
Saturday night, Joe Lathum of
Alexandria will return to the
Prism stage for a night of
contemporary and traditional folk
music. Mr. Lathum, owner of the
Alexandria Folklore Center, has
performed professionally for over
ten years and has had several offers
to record. He is a well-known folk
performer throughout the
Washington area.
The standard cover charge of 50
cents will be charged for both
nights. The presentation of
"Beyond the Fringe" will be the
first time that a dramatic
performance has been attempted in
the Prism. A spokesman for the
Coffeehouse Steering Committee
said yesterday, "This endeavor
represents a continuing effort to
widen the scope of the Prism's
activities to better serve the
University community."
