CHRC To Sponsor
'Tutoring Teach-In'
A "Tutoring Teach-In", sponsored
by the Charlottesville Human
Relations Council, will be held at 8
tomorrow night in the South Meeting
room of Newcomb Hall. Greg
Hurray, chairman of C.H.R.C.
tutoring committee, said that all
students interested in learning
about any one of the University's
various tutoring programs are invited.
A film and a speaker will be
featured at the meeting, where opportunities
and programs available
to students will be explained.
Special emphasis will be placed on
the Venable School Tutorial for
fourth and fifth graders who are at
a disadvantage because of poor educational
facilities. A teacher from
the school will be present to discuss
the problems involved.
With a successful first semester
at the Venable School already behind
them, Mr. Hurray's committee
plans to broaden the program in an
attempt to reach a larger percentage
of students and children.
Mr. Hurray explained that last
fall, with the help of the Community
Action Organization of Charlottesville,
a tutoring program for
underprivileged first and second
graders was begun. The purpose of
the program was to give the children
someone with whom they could
form an adult relationship, and to
provide them with the individual
attention that a teacher in a classroom
of twenty-five could not.
Success was slowly realized as the
project increased from ten to thirty
tutors and they began to grasp a
sense of rapport with the children.
