Relations Council Requests
More Scholarship Support

At the last meeting of the
Martin Luther King Chapter of the
Virginia Council on Human
Relations a resolution asking the
administration to temporarily
finance the Martin Luther King
Scholarship fund was passed
unanimously.

After an exchange of letters
between Bob Yuhnke, last year's
Council president, and President
Shannon last year, it was agreed
that the University would provide
matching funds for the scholarship
program.

The rest of the funds were to be
raised primarily through student
and faculty donations. These
donations, however, have not been
as large as expected nor are they
coming in at a fast enough pace to
insure a quick establishment of the
scholarship fund, according to Bud
Ogle, vice-president of the Human
Relations Council.

The motion, which passed
unanimously at the Council's last
meeting, reads "Funding of the
University-approved fellowship
program for culturally deprived
students in urgent and pressing.
This program must not be held up
for yet another year.

Mr. Ogle said that the meeting
of the Human Relations Council
originally scheduled for tonight at
7:30 has been cancelled. He said
the next meeting of the Council
will be next Wednesday in the
South Meeting Room of Newcomb
Hall. He said that housing,
scholarships, and the recruitment of
black students will be topics of
discussion at the meeting, which is
open to anyone interested in
attending.

Current projects that the
Council is working on include the
recruitment of more black students
at the University by sending out
black students who currently
attend the University to help
admissions officers during their
visits to predominantly Negro high
schools in Virginia.

Another project of the Human
Relations Council, Mr. Ogle said,
was a study on coeducation at the
University.
