Spanish Award

Asst. Spanish Prof.
Manuel C. Lassaletta has
received an award from the
Royal Spanish Academy for his
work entitled "Aportaciones al
estudio del lenguaje coloquial
galdosiano."

The linguistic study is of
the colloquial language of
Galdos, the "best-known
(Spanish) novelist of the 19th
century," according to Mr.
Lassaletta. His work
unanimously placed second in
the Rivadeneira Foundation
contest which opened Oct. 23,
1969, in Madrid, Spain.

The award, one of the
highest made by the Academy
in the work of linguistics, is an
important prize in Spain. The
winning works are published in
the papers there. "It is a
recognition of scholastic
merit," said Mr. Lassaletta.

Since its foundation in the
18th century, the Academy has
been the highest authority on
linguistics in the
Spanish-speaking world.
