Oxford Music Prof. To Speak
Mr. Joseph Kerman, music 
professor and former Music 
Department Chairman at the 
University of California at 
Berkeley, will speak on 
"Beethoven Research Today" 
this Thursday night, at 8:15 in 
room 107, Old Cabell Hall.
Mr. Kerman is currently the 
Heather Professor of Music at 
Oxford University. He has held 
Guggenheim and Fulbright 
Fellowships, and has been a 
Grantee of the National 
Institute of Arts and Letters.
The lecture, which is open 
to the public without charge, is 
presented under the auspices of 
the Visiting Scholars Program, 
University Center in Virginia 
and the McIntire Department 
of Music.
Movie Passes
Ticket passes for the 
Paramount Theatre are 
available at a reduced rate of 
$1.25 from the Association of 
Residential Councils.
Usually costing $2, tickets 
can be acquired from any ARC 
representative or at the offices 
on fourth floor, Newcomb 
Hall. They are valid for all 
movies in ABC theaters in 
Virginia and the Carolinas, 
except for road shows.

Pictures for Corks and Curls 
will again be taken during the 
week of Dec. 11 through 15 in 
the Game Room in Newcomb 
Hall basement. No 
appointment is necessary.
ACTION Speech
Neal R. Berle, Dean of the 
New College of the University 
of Alabama and author of, 
most recently, "Innovations in 
Undergraduate Education: 
Selected Institutional Profiles 
and Some Thoughts About 
Experimentalism," will speak 
tonight at 8 in the Newcomb 
Hall Ballroom on the 
University Year for ACTION 
(UYA) Program.
He is conducting an 
evaluation of the 25 UYA 
programs now operating at 
colleges and universities. The 
University recently received a 
UYA grant to plan a program 
to place 25 volunteers in 
academically useful 
community projects within a 
50 mile radius of the 
University, beginning the 
second semester.
The projects will be 
oriented toward health and 
education problems in the 
communities. Applications for 
the UYA program, which will 
involve undergraduate and 
graduate level students in the 
pre-professional schools, will 
be available at the meeting, or 
at the UYA Office, 6th Floor 
of The Towers, Thursday and 
Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
China Film
The Virginia Field Staff of 
the National Committee on 
US-China Relations will 
sponsor one showing of the 
film "Misunderstanding 
China," an NBC production, 
on Tuesday Dec. 12 at 3:30 
p.m. in Wilson Hall Room 301. 
The film seeks to demonstrate 
and correct American 
misconceptions about China 
derived from stereotypes 
promulgated by the mass 
media. Admission is free.
